How to use Kadalaz
Kadalaz gives you a place to write, organise work and handle everyday calculations while you are already in your browser. It is useful for students, people taking meeting notes, small teams planning tasks, and anyone tracking a budget or a list. Choose Notepad for writing, Sticky Notes for tasks and projects, or Spreadsheet for tables and calculations. Your work is saved on this device, without creating an account.
START HERE
Three workspaces, one place to work.
Choose your workspace
Use the main navigation to switch between Notepad, Sticky Notes and Spreadsheet. Each workspace has its own saved content. Light and dark themes are shared.
Write, organise or calculate
Notepad is a tabbed writing space for drafts and meeting notes. Sticky Notes turns ideas into cards, projects, Kanban columns and a Gantt schedule. Spreadsheet handles budgets, expenses, lists and simple calculations in named workbooks.
Find help and support
The top three-dot Site options menu opens How to Use and What’s New. The heart menu offers feedback and donations. Small screens use compact controls and horizontally scrolling tools.
Keep a backup
Closing the browser normally keeps your saved work. Clearing site data or changing browser profiles does not. Export a JSON backup before clearing data or moving devices. See Downloads and backups for the options.
NOTEPAD
A writing space that stays ready.
Create and manage notes
Use + on the bottom tab row, or Ctrl + Alt + 1, to start a note. Select a tab to switch notes and rename it through the note menu. Empty unused drafts are not saved; a note containing a checkbox is saved even before you add words.
Close, reopen and delete
Closing a saved tab keeps it in Notes and Recent. Use the note list to reopen it, select several notes for deletion, or permanently delete a note. Read the confirmation before permanent deletion. Recent lists your most recently opened saved notes.
Format your writing
The formatting tools follow the font controls. Checkbox, bulleted list and numbered list remain first while the other controls scroll separately. Bold, italic, underline and strikethrough are followed by superscript and subscript; Normal text and H1–H3 are further along. Select text before formatting. Checkbox lines support checking, unchecking, typing and deletion, including empty lines. Formatting survives note switching and reopening.
Find and adjust
Use Find for search and replacement, Wrap for line wrapping, Symbols for characters, and font family/size for readability. Copy produces readable plain text. On phones, Aa opens font and formatting settings.
Download your work
Download or Ctrl + S saves readable TXT. More offers Save as Text and Save as Word. DOCX retains supported headings, text formatting, lists, superscript/subscript and checkbox symbols. Use a JSON backup to restore an editable Kadalaz note, rather than a Word file.
STICKY NOTES
Capture an idea, then turn it into a task.
Create a card
Choose New note, enter its title and text, select a project and a card colour, then save. New cards start collapsed. Click the writing preview or arrow to expand for editing; collapse it again when finished.
Use the collapsed menu
Every collapsed card has a visible three-dot menu. Choose To Do, In Progress or Done without expanding it. The same menu offers rename, text/rich HTML downloads and deletion. Collapsed cards also show their due date and a colour selector.
Write inside a card
Expanded cards provide rich text, bold/italic/underline/strikethrough, bulleted and numbered lists, checkbox lines and embedded images. Checkboxes can be checked, unchecked or removed. Supported embedded images are PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP, up to 512 KiB each and 2 MiB of encoded image data per Sticky Notes workspace.
Colour, stars and completion
Choose from ten card colours. A star can use its own colour, independently of priority. Completed cards become grey while keeping text readable; their chosen colour returns if reopened. Kanban keeps a contrasting background so grey completed cards remain distinct.
Set card dimensions
Settings lets you choose width and height independently. Width is 100–1000px and height 100–1200px. Blank width uses automatic responsive sizing; blank height uses the width to make a square. Expanded cards use half the available desktop width where space allows, full phone width, and twice the compact height. Writing areas scroll inside the card. Small cards keep compact controls; phone Notes uses one card per row.
PROJECTS AND PRIORITY
Keep projects together without crowding the page.
Use project tabs in Notes
Notes shows All Notes first, then pinned projects, General Notes, and other projects. Pinned and unpinned projects are each alphabetical. All Notes shows one combined card grid with project labels. Select a project tab to show only that project. Tabs show counts, scroll horizontally and remember your selection. Use the pin beside a project tab to pin or unpin it.
Manage projects and assignments
The folder-plus Manage projects button creates, renames and removes projects. A card’s folder menu changes its project. General Notes holds cards without a project. Removing a project keeps its cards and moves them to General Notes.
Kanban and filtering
Kanban groups each project into To Do, In Progress and Done, with reddish, yellowish and greenish headers. Move a card between columns or change its status in the card menu. Priority notes, Kanban and Gantt retain the Project filter. Kanban/Gantt project headings can collapse or expand; Collapse all and Expand all act on displayed groups. Hide completed removes completed cards from view without deleting them.
Priority Notes is another view of the same card
A priority flag keeps the original card in its project and shows it in the dedicated Priority notes view. Both edit one saved record. Newly marking a card as priority makes its Priority Notes appearance start collapsed. Unflagging removes it from that view; deletion removes the saved card. Stars and priority are separate. Settings can hide the dedicated Priority notes view without removing priority flags.
Recognise a due warning
Priority dots are blue normally and red when a dated unfinished note enters the warning window or becomes overdue. Defaults are five calendar days, blue and red; Settings changes the colours and the 0–365-day warning period. Undated priority cards keep the normal colour. Separate red notification dots beside Sticky Notes and Priority notes warn only for dated unfinished priority notes due soon or overdue. Blinks run once per second and become steady with reduced motion.
Arrange cards
Drag a card’s handle, use its earlier/later touch arrows, or focus the handle and use Left/Right for manual order within its project. In Kanban, the handle’s Left/Right keys move status columns. Use the folder menu to move projects in Notes. In views with project sections, dropping into a project assigns it; dropping into Priority notes adds priority while keeping its project. Automatic Sticky Notes sorting and cloud sync remain future work.
SCHEDULING AND GANTT
See what needs to happen and when.
Set or clear dates
Use a card’s calendar to save a start and end date, or clear its schedule. The end date is the due date used by priority warnings. A start/end pair must be valid and the end cannot precede the start.
Navigate the timeline
Gantt shows two weeks at a time. Use Previous, Today and Next to change the period. The date header stays fixed while note rows scroll, and dates stay aligned with bars when you scroll horizontally. Project sections can collapse and expand.
Change a schedule
Click a note or schedule bar to configure dates. Drag a bar to move its schedule; drag an edge to change its duration. Unscheduled notes and notes outside the visible period are labelled. Completed notes remain readable.
Use a small screen
The site header and Sticky Notes toolbar stay above the workspace. In phone landscape, the toolbar scrolls sideways and the timeline instruction text is hidden to leave more room for dates and rows.
SPREADSHEET
Everyday tables, budgets and calculations.
Workbooks and sheets
Choose a workbook in the dropdown or create one with New workbook. Its three-dot menu renames, duplicates, imports, exports or deletes a workbook. Use + below the grid to add a sheet; the bottom three-dot menu renames, duplicates, moves left/right or deletes the selected sheet. A new workspace starts with one blank workbook and sheet. Deletion asks for confirmation. Menus stay within the screen; the bottom sheet menu opens upwards when space allows.
Edit and select
Click a cell and type, double-click or press F2 to edit existing content, or enter a value/formula in the formula bar and press Enter. Escape cancels direct editing. Arrows, Tab and Enter navigate. Shift+arrows or dragging selects a range; the address box also accepts A1:B5 for touch users. Click a row number or column letter to select that dimension. The status bar shows nonempty count and numeric sum/average.
Copy, fill and undo
Copy/cut/paste accepts tabular text from Excel and Google Sheets. Copies inside Kadalaz retain supported styles and adjust relative formulas. Drag the selection’s fill square to extend values/formulas, or select a range and use Data → Fill down/right. Absolute/mixed references stay predictable. Undo/redo keeps up to 40 in-session changes. Delete or Data → Clear contents keeps cell formatting.
Format cells or a range
Use font, size, bold, italic, text colour, cell colour, all/bottom borders, horizontal/vertical alignment and wrapping. Number formats are General, Text, Number, INR Currency, Percentage and Date, with decimal controls. Formatting applies to the selection. Text format keeps entries such as leading-zero identifiers as text.
Insert and manage dimensions
Select a cell or range and open Rows / columns. Insert row above and Insert column before act at the start of the selection. Insert row below and Insert column after insert one blank dimension after its last selected row/column. Existing cells, sizes, hidden dimensions and direct formula references shift accordingly. Delete removes selected dimensions; keep at least one row and column. Resize by dragging header edges or entering a size, hide dimensions, and use Unhide all to show them again. Freeze top row and Freeze first column are toggles. Add rows/columns extends the grid within its limits.
Write a formula
Start with =. Examples: =A2*B2, =SUM(C2:C10), =IF(C2>100,"Over budget","OK"), =ROUND(A2/3,2), and ='October'!B5. Supported functions are SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, MIN, MAX, IF and ROUND. References can use ranges, other sheets in the same workbook, and $A$1, $A1 or A$1. Inputs recalculate dependent formulas. Error text and tooltips explain invalid formulas, missing references, unknown functions, division by zero and circular references.
Sort, filter and search
Data sorts complete rows using the active column, keeping related row values together. Without a multi-row selection it treats row 1 as the header; otherwise it sorts the selected rows. Relative formulas move with sorted rows; review absolute/cross-sheet references after sorting. Contains-text filters keep row 1 and hide nonmatching rows. Clear filters shows them again. Find and replace searches stored values/formulas in the current sheet, including hidden rows.
Know the limits
A sheet starts with 100 rows and 26 columns and supports up to 500 rows and 52 columns. Up to 50 sheets per workbook and 100 workbooks are supported. A cell can hold 32,767 characters. Charts, pivots, macros, collaboration, named ranges, dynamic arrays, whole-column formula ranges and additional Excel functions are outside this version. Structural edits adjust direct A1 references, but partially deleted ranges can produce #REF!. Cut/paste keeps formula text and does not rewrite other cells pointing at the source.
DOWNLOADS AND BACKUPS
Keep editable backups as well as readable exports.
Notepad
Download/Ctrl + S saves TXT; More offers TXT and DOCX. Import .txt opens text files as notes. More → Download Notepad backup saves JSON; Site options → Export all creates a ZIP of TXT notes plus the formatted JSON backup. Restore Notepad backup accepts JSON or an Export all ZIP up to 16 MB. It adds notes, skips identical records and gives conflicting IDs separate notes while keeping current preferences. V3 backups can include optional spreadsheets; older backups without them still work.
Sticky Notes
The archive menu exports/imports its JSON backup, including cards, projects, pins, rich content, images, tasks, colours, dates and settings. Imports up to 8 MB add work without replacing existing notes; conflicting IDs are kept separately. V3 can carry optional spreadsheet data. A card’s three-dot menu also downloads readable TXT or rich HTML; use JSON for editable restoration.
Spreadsheet and full Kadalaz backup
The workbook menu exports XLSX for the whole workbook or CSV for its current sheet. Export Kadalaz backup saves the full supported spreadsheet model plus the saved Notepad and Sticky Notes stores. Importing that JSON adds spreadsheet workbooks and offers optional additive note restoration. Export a backup promptly if autosave reports failure; current unsaved spreadsheet changes remain in the open page.
CSV compatibility
CSV imports into a new sheet. Plain numbers become numeric; leading zeros and formula-like text are kept as text. Export writes calculated values, with date-formatted cells as readable dates. Text starting with formula characters receives a leading apostrophe for safer opening elsewhere. CSV has no cell styles, formulas or multiple sheets.
XLSX compatibility
XLSX imports a new workbook and exports all sheets with supported values, formulas, basic cell styles, sizes, hidden dimensions and one-row/column freeze panes. Compatibility notices explain limitations. Complex styles, theme/indexed colours, custom currencies/formats, merged cells, validation, conditional formatting, comments, external links, advanced panes and unsupported functions may not survive. Local contains-text filters are saved in JSON, not as Excel filter rules. Keep the original Excel file; JSON is the most faithful Kadalaz backup.
Import size and recovery
Spreadsheet file imports are limited to 8 MB and expanded XLSX content to 32 MB. Browser storage quota varies. If saved spreadsheet data cannot be read, Kadalaz preserves it, blocks changes to that store and offers a recovery backup. Do not clear site data as a troubleshooting step before making backups.
KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS
Use the keyboard where it helps.
Notepad
Ctrl + Alt + 1 creates a note. Ctrl + S downloads the current note as text. Find, copying and undo/redo work with the editor; open the Notepad shortcuts dialog for its current full shortcut list.
Sticky Notes
Focus a card’s drag handle and use Left/Right to reorder within its group, or move between status columns in Kanban. Menus and controls have accessible labels. Tab moves through controls.
Spreadsheet
Arrows move between cells. Tab moves across columns; Enter moves between rows. Shift+arrows selects a range. F2 edits a cell and Escape cancels editing. Ctrl/Cmd+C, X and V copy, cut and paste when the grid is focused. Ctrl/Cmd+Z undoes; Ctrl/Cmd+Y or Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Z redoes. Ctrl/Cmd+F opens sheet find/replace when the grid is focused.
Tabs and menus
Notes project tabs support Left/Right, Home and End. Spreadsheet menus support Arrow Down to open and focus an action, and Escape to close and return focus. On small screens, scroll toolbars or tab rows sideways to reach more controls.
SAVING AND PRIVACY
Your browser holds your work.
Local saving
Notepad, Sticky Notes and Spreadsheet keep separate saved stores on this device. They restore when you reopen Kadalaz in the same browser profile and origin. Themes are shared. There is no account or cloud synchronisation.
Watch the save status
A normal saved status confirms a browser write succeeded. Storage failures are shown visibly. Keep the page open and export a backup if saving fails. Spreadsheet data changed by another tab triggers a reload notice rather than live collaboration.
Protect your work
Browser/site data clearing, private sessions, another profile or another device can leave you without local notes. Keep regular JSON backups. If you roll back the website version, keep backups of newer rich notes and spreadsheets; older website files do not convert their data into an older format.
What stays local
Writing, spreadsheet calculations and file conversion run in your browser. Kadalaz retains Google Analytics for site usage. Feedback and donation links open their respective external services.
FEEDBACK AND SUPPORT
Help shape Kadalaz.
Send feedback
Open the heart menu and choose Send feedback to open the Google Form. Describe what you were trying to do, what happened and the screen/browser you used. Avoid including private note or workbook content unless you intend to share it.
Support the project
The same heart menu contains the donation link. What’s New, available through Site options, records the current release and earlier history.
