VERSION HISTORY

What's new in Kadalaz

New features, thoughtful improvements and a little more room to think.

V3

Current release

Write, organise and calculate in one browser workspace.

V3 adds Spreadsheet alongside Notepad and Sticky Notes, with the same compact design, shared themes and browser-local saving. This 31 October update corrects menu placement, adds insertion on both sides of a selection, and replaces the user guide with instructions for all three workspaces.

Corrections in this update

  • The bottom sheet-options menu opens upwards when space allows and stays within the viewport. Spreadsheet menus adapt near screen edges and on resize; Arrow Down opens a menu and Escape closes it.
  • Rows / columns now offers Insert row below and Insert column after, alongside above/before. A new blank row or column is placed after the last selected dimension. Existing values, formatting, dimension sizes, hidden dimensions and direct formula references shift with the insertion.
  • How to Use has been rewritten around Notepad, Sticky Notes/project management and Spreadsheet, with separate scheduling, backup, saving and shortcut guidance.

Spreadsheet

  • Multiple named workbooks and sheets, workbook dropdown/menu, bottom sheet tabs and sheet reordering. First use starts with one blank workbook and sheet.
  • Cell/formula-bar editing, range selection, keyboard navigation, copy/cut/paste, undo/redo, clear contents and formula-aware fill.
  • Fonts, sizes, bold/italic, text/fill colours, basic borders, alignment, wrapping, number formats and decimals. Insert/delete/resize/hide/unhide rows and columns; freeze the top row and first column.
  • A formula parser supports arithmetic, ranges, relative/absolute/mixed references, references between sheets, SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, MIN, MAX, IF and ROUND. Calculations refresh when inputs change and common errors have readable explanations.
  • Whole-row sorting, contains-text filters, find/replace, selection count/sum/average and separate spreadsheet autosave with visible failure handling.
  • CSV sheet import/export, styled XLSX workbooks and editable JSON backups. Existing Notepad and Sticky Notes backups accept optional spreadsheet data while retaining older backup compatibility.

Existing workspaces retained

  • Notepad keeps bottom note tabs, Recent, formatted text and checkbox lines, superscript/subscript, find/replace, fonts/wrap/symbols, TXT/DOCX and backups. Checkbox/bullet/number tools stay first.
  • Sticky Notes keeps project tabs ordered All Notes → pinned projects → General Notes → other projects, pins, collapsed card menus, card sizing/colours/stars, checklists/images, scheduling and manual ordering.
  • Priority Notes, due-date warning settings and notification dots, contrasting Kanban columns, frozen Gantt dates and compact mobile layouts remain available.
  • Existing saved-data stores, light/dark themes, Analytics, feedback and donation links are preserved.

Limits and file compatibility

Spreadsheet supports up to 500 rows × 52 columns per sheet, 50 sheets per workbook and 100 workbooks. Only the seven listed functions and supported basic Excel formatting are included. Keep original XLSX files and use JSON for the fullest editable Kadalaz backup. Charts, pivots, macros, collaboration and cloud sync remain outside this release.

V2.2

Previous release

A clearer, more compact workspace

  • Notes uses project tabs instead of expandable project sections. Tabs appear in this order: All Notes, pinned projects alphabetically, General Notes, then other projects alphabetically. All Notes shows a combined card grid with project labels. Each project tab shows only that project’s cards. Counts respect Hide completed. Use each project tab’s pin button to pin/unpin it. Tabs scroll horizontally, support arrow keys/Home/End, and remember the selected project using the existing filter. Kanban and Gantt retain project sections, filtering and folding.
  • Gantt keeps the date header fixed vertically while note rows scroll in the timeline; dates and bars stay aligned during horizontal scrolling. Kanban uses contrasting blue-grey column backgrounds and a visible outline on completed cards. Newly marking a note as priority clears its remembered expansion in Priority Notes, so it starts collapsed there. Shared header, toolbars, project headings and section gaps use less vertical padding. Phone landscape has a horizontally scrolling Sticky Notes toolbar and omits the Gantt instruction text to preserve writing and timeline space.
  • In Notes, use the pin button beside a project heading to pin or unpin it. Pinned projects appear first, followed by General Notes, then all other projects. Both project groups remain alphabetical. Pinning is saved on this device and included in Sticky Notes JSON backups. Kanban and Gantt retain their alphabetical project order. Collapsed cards show a three-dot actions menu with To Do, In Progress and Done; changing status does not expand the card. New cards start collapsed.
  • Notepad pins Checkbox line, Bulleted list and Numbered list at the beginning of formatting controls. The remaining controls scroll separately, including Normal text and headings. Superscript/subscript and blank checkbox saving remain included.
  • Notepad formatting starts with Checkbox line, Bulleted list and Numbered list. Bold, Italic, Underline and Strikethrough follow, then Superscript and Subscript. Normal text and H1–H3 remain available by scrolling the formatting toolbar. Checkbox line works on a blank line, and a checkbox-only note is saved even before text is entered. Superscript and subscript are preserved in saved notes, backups and Word exports.
  • Corrected the Notepad three-dot Site options menu visibility and positioning, keeping What’s new and How to use accessible across screen sizes.
  • Projects are displayed alphabetically in Notes, Kanban, Gantt and project selectors. General Notes replaces the Unassigned display label and stays last. Existing assignments and manual note ordering are unchanged.
  • Collapsed cards now show their due date (or No due date) and a directly accessible card colour picker, including small cards. The New sticky note window lets you select a colour before saving. New notes still start collapsed; existing notes and colours are preserved.
  • Project headers keep only their lower separator line. Priority notes appears only in its dedicated view; flagged cards remain in their projects in Notes. A red due-date warning dot beside the Priority notes tab excludes completed and undated cards and respects reduced motion.
  • A separator below the shared header and reduced desktop Notepad toolbar spacing remove the blank band above the controls.
  • Notepad note names appear in the bottom tabs; the duplicate name above the editor is removed.
  • Desktop Notepad and Sticky Notes tabs sit between the logo and save controls when there is enough room. Narrow screens retain compact navigation.
  • Notes, Kanban and Gantt project sections have separator lines, larger collapse/expand arrows and clear hover and keyboard focus styling.
  • Compact header controls show a short save status, theme icons and the support heart. Export all, What’s new and How to use are in the three-dot Site options menu.
  • Existing saved notes, formatting, settings, exports and priority notifications are retained.

V2.1

Earlier release

Writing and planning in one browser workspace

Formatting, Word exports, due-priority notifications and flexible cards, with existing notes preserved.

Notepad formatting and exports

  • Optional bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, three heading levels, bulleted/numbered lists and checkbox lines, immediately beside the font selectors. Small screens expose them through Aa and a scrolling tool row.
  • Plain notes keep their spacing and blank lines. Formatted notes retain formatting across tabs, closed-note reopening and browser reloads.
  • Download and Ctrl + S retain TXT export. More offers Save as Text (.txt) and Save as Word (.docx). TXT and Copy contain readable words and task/list markers; Word keeps supported formatting, heading styles and native lists, with checkbox state symbols.
  • Export all retains one TXT per open note and adds a full JSON backup with rich open and closed notes. Direct JSON backup and additive JSON/Export all ZIP restoration are available. Imported and stored rich content is sanitized.

A consistent workspace

  • Kanban and Gantt projects have separator lines and larger collapse/expand arrows.
  • The scrolling Sticky Notes area has a white background in light mode.
  • Updated shared header, navigation, buttons, typography and both themes. The Kadalaz wordmark keeps the Browser Notepad tagline and shared support links.
  • Notepad places the active-note title beside its desktop tools, with refreshed tabs and an inset writing surface. The decorative vertical editor accent has been removed in both themes.
  • The logo, workspace navigation and Sticky Notes toolbar remain fixed while only the notes area scrolls, across Notes, Priority notes, Kanban and Gantt.
  • Expanded cards combine their title and both former three-dot menus into one compact header. Status, rename, text/rich HTML download and delete are inside the three-dot menu. The calendar follows the star controls, the expanded drag grip is hidden and the collapse arrow stays at the far right. Narrow cards scroll the controls sideways, leaving more room for writing.
  • Workspace navigation tabs have horizontal padding around their text in both themes, including hover highlights.
  • Sticky Notes uses one desktop toolbar with New note at the right. New cards start collapsed and expand when you choose to edit them. Phone portrait controls remain compact, and Notepad retains its single top and bottom bars in phone landscape.

Card sizes and editing

  • Automatic square cards fit across desktop content, with one card per phone row. Width and height are independent, each starting at 100px. Blank height makes a square; blank width keeps responsive sizing.
  • Expanded cards use half the desktop content width or full phone width and twice the compact height. Writing areas scroll while controls remain accessible. Kanban cards stay within their columns.
  • Small cards use an extra-controls menu when expanded and a horizontally scrolling formatting bar.
  • Rich card text, bullets, numbered lists, checkbox lines and embedded PNG/JPEG/GIF/WebP images. Checkbox removal preserves text, empty checkboxes can be deleted and task completion updates counts.
  • Ten card colours, selectable star colours, separate status and priority controls, readable grey completed cards and the restored chosen colour when reopened.

Priority and due dates

  • Priority notes shows linked copies of flagged cards above the project groups, while the originals remain in their projects. Both appearances edit one saved note. An optional dedicated Priority notes view follows project/completion filters.
  • Card priority dots are blue normally and red from five calendar days before the due date through overdue. Undated cards stay blue. Both colours and the 0–365-day warning period are configurable.
  • A separate red notification beside Sticky Notes appears for unfinished priority notes within the warning window or overdue. Completed and undated notes are excluded. It stays available in Notepad, with a tooltip and accessible label; phone landscape also marks Site options.
  • Both notifications blink once per second and remain steady with reduced motion. Saved changes and date checks refresh the shared notification.

Projects and scheduling

  • Create, rename and remove projects, assign cards and filter across Notes, Priority notes, Kanban and Gantt. Removing a project keeps its notes in Unassigned.
  • Collapse/expand individual or all groups. Views remember group folding, with independent card expansion in Notes, Priority notes and Kanban.
  • Manual ordering, keyboard/touch controls and drag/drop remain. Kanban shows reddish To Do, yellowish In Progress and greenish Done headers; completed cards can be hidden.
  • Set/clear dates on cards. The two-week Gantt supports period navigation, project groups, schedule movement/resizing and horizontal scrolling. Unscheduled and outside-period notes remain distinguishable.

Guidance and data preservation

  • Rewritten How to use covers Notepad separately from Sticky Notes and project management, with detailed settings, exports and recovery instructions.
  • Existing Notepad and Sticky Notes stores remain separate. Notes, unknown fields, shortcuts, Analytics, feedback and donation links are retained.
  • Cloud sync and automatic sorting remain future work. The spreadsheet workspace is planned for V3.0.

V2.0

Earlier release

A fresh look. A new way to organise.

A brighter Kadalaz, with Sticky Notes for ideas, checklists and everyday tasks.

A more energetic design

  • A refreshed Notepad and shared navigation, with teal and mint surfaces, warm yellow highlights and rounded controls.
  • Readable text and clearer controls in both light and dark themes.

Sticky Notes and tasks

  • Create, edit and delete sticky notes, with checklists and deletion undo.
  • Choose Board for a flexible overview, Kanban for task status, or Timeline for scheduled work.
  • Move notes through To Do, In Progress and Done. Automatic colours use reddish shades for To Do and yellowish shades for In Progress. The Done column uses green, while completed notes turn grey with readable text.
